Program Officer - Reading & Writing Instruction Program, Nepal

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Currently, we work in 11 countries of Asia and Africa.

In Nepal, we believe that the change is possible if our children became educated. If we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond, we can achieve our desired change in Nepal. Being inspired with this notion, as of now, we, together with our partners, have supported to establish over 3500 school libraries for creating a reading habit of children, published 231 children books for quality materials to read, constructed over 500 schools to improve school environments and supporting reading & writing skill development in 240 primary class rooms of 80 schools. In addition, we have also been providing financial, material, academic & life skills education support to more than 3000 girls from underprivileged families to complete secondary education and beyond. Currently, we have a team of around 100 dedicated staff, geographically dispersed, and working through 9 partner NGOs in 11 districts.

In order to oversee our Reading and Writing Instruction (RWI) Program in Dhading. we are looking for a passionate, experienced and creative Nepalese citizen for the position of Program Officer (PO) to be based in our Dhading field office. The PO reports to the Field Program Manager of Nawalparasi for program management issue and to the Program Manager - RWI based in Kathmandu for technical matters of RWI program. S/he will be responsible for managing all aspects of RWI program implemented in the assigned district (s) which include developing conceptual framework, planning, budgeting, implementation, conducting teacher professional development activities, capacitating building of partner NGO. reporting, M & E. district level networking and advocacy.

The key selection criteria are:

a) Bachelor degree in Nepali Language (Master Degree Preferred) from recognized university

b) Minimum 3 years of Nepali Language teaching experience at primary level

c) Good knowledge and understanding of education philosophy

d) Minimum 1 year program management experience preferably education program

e) Expertise in designing and conducting capacity building activities

f) Fluent in writing and speaking of English Language
